The benefits of the Orca Legionella control system

GUARANTEED TO KILL LEGIONELLA BACTERIA

To effectively guarantee Legionella control a water treatment method must remove the biofilm layer that coats the inside of pipes, which can act as a refuge for Legionella bacteria to multiple.

The Orca copper and silver ionisation system is the only water treatment method proven to be effective against biofilms and will eliminate the Legionella bacteria found in it and throughout the rest of the water system.

ProEconomy also guarantees that the Orca water treatment system delivers the correct copper and silver levels and that the Orca Legionella control system operates properly.

ProEconomy is therefore the only water treatment method that can guarantee to completely remove Legionella bacteria from water systems.

REDUCE TEMPERATURES

In an attempt to ensure Legionella control water has traditionally been maintained at a minimum of 50°C within 1 minute of turning on each tap.

In practice this is difficult to maintain as not all taps are used regularly and it consumes large amounts of energy through heating systems. This process has substantial heating costs and significantly contributes to a sites CO2 output.

The Orca copper and silver ionisation system is effective at any temperature.

Legionella control with the Orca system does not require elevated hot water temperatures and temperatures can be safely reduced whilst manintaining Legionella control.

REDUCE COSTS AND CARBON

The Orca copper and silver ionisation system does not require elevated hot water temperatures and removes biofilm, reducing costs and carbon:

Costs:

  • Reduced water temperature offers significant savings in heating costs.
  • Reduced water temperature negates the need for expensive thermostatic mixing valves.
  • The Orca removes biofilm, which decreases the time and money spent maintaining  and cleaning water bearing equipment.

Carbon:

  • Reduced water temperature decreases energy usage, reducing a sites CO2 footprint.

MIXING VALVES ARE NOT NEEDED

High temperatures have extensively been used to treat water.

To prevent scalding at the outlet mixing valves combine hot water with cold water.

Mixing valves are expensive to install and operate and they require regular maintenance which is often overlooked.

Mixing valves combine hot 'treated’ water with cold untreated water that may contain Legionella bacteria, creating an ideal temperature for the bacteria to breed.

If not properly maintained mixing valves can become breeding grounds for Legionella bacteria.

The UK Health Protection Agency has voiced its concerns, stating that it is virtually impossible to get successful Legionella control downstream of mixing valves.

The Orca water treatment system does not require high temperatures to treat water, which removes the need for mixing valves.

IMPROVE WATER QUALITY

The Orca copper and silver ionisation system kills Legionella bacteria and other disease causing pathogens that include Pseudomonas, Pneumophila, E-Coli, Coliforms and Salmonella, improving water quality.

Biofilm is a bacterial breeding ground that is also attacked and removed leaving water systems clean and free from pathogens.

BIOFILM IS ATTACKED AND REMOVED

Biofilm is a slimy layer on the inner surfaces of pipes that develops rapidly in areas with poor water flow, the correct temperature for growth and where there is a nutrient source, such as scale, sediment, corroded products and trapped organic and inorganic materials supplied by the flowing water.

Legionella bacteria hides and quickly multiples in colonized biofilm.

Biofilm is the largest bacterial breeding ground in water systems and can colonize complete systems.

Any method of Legionella control needs to be able to attack and remove biofilm and the Legionella bacteria within it.

The Orca water ionisation system is the only water treatment meathod that is proven to attack and remove biofilm.

TESTED AND APPROVED

The UK Approved Code of Practice ACOP (L8) from the HSE supports copper and silver water ionisation as an effective method of Legionella control in hot and cold water systems (HMSO ISBN 0-7176-1772-6).

The UK HTM04-01 guidance for NHS trusts also supports copper and silver water ionisation as an effective method of Legionella control in water systems.

The Orca water treatment system conforms to the maximum allowed values for copper and silver in drinking water as prescribed in the UK Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 1989, and the UK Water Supply (Water Quality) regulations 2000.

The UK Drinking Water Inspectorate approves of copper and silver water ionisation.

The Orca system has been fully tested and approved under the UK Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS).

All electrical components of the Orca water ionisation system have been tested and qualified for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

All design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of the Orca system is carried out in accordance with the terms of ProEconomy's registration under ISO 9001.

YOU ARE COVERED

Water quality is regularly monitored with the Orca Legionella control system and results are certified according to national standards.

Should any of the results not conform to national legislations or guidance then an action plan is prepared and put into effect.

These plans are prepared by trained and fully qualified personnel who have extensive knowledge of the behavior of Legionella in water systems and how to best control it.

Copies of all records, such as water analysis records, action plans, action reports and servicing details are securely kept by ProEconomy.

All records are treated with strict confidentiality.

ProEconomy's water treatment solution therefore gives you peace of mind.

LEGIONELLA CONTROL THAT SUITS EVERY SITE

There are four models of the Orca Legionella control system that fit different flow rates and water capacities.

The Orca copper and silver ionisation systems manifolds are tailor-made to suit each individual site.

The Orca water treatment system will treat water from wherever it is supplied to the site e.g. a mains feed, borehole, from storage tanks or directly fed to the site.

The Orca Legionella control system will effectively treat softened, raw, hot and cold water.

LOW MAINTENANCE

The Orca water treatment system controls biofilm formation, reducing maintenance on tanks, taps, mixing valves, shower heads and other water bearing equipment.

Mixing valves can be removed which negates the need to maintain them.

Maintenance of the Orca system itself is carried out by ProEconomy.

EASY TO INSTALL AND OPERATE

The Orca Legionella control system is easily fitted into an existing water system and can be easily included in a new-build application.

The Orca system is installed into the flow of water.

The Orca copper and silver ionisation system is assembled off-site to minimize disruption when it is connected to the water system.

The Orca water treatment system is continually updated with the latest technology to ensure ease of use (see the 5th generation Orca system for latest developments).

NON-CORROSIVE

Unlike most chemical water treatments such as chlorine dioxide , the copper and silver ions are not corrosive to metal pipes including copper, galvanized steel and aluminum piping.

The copper ions from the Orca water treatment system can help plate and rejuvenate piping.

GOOD DISTRIBUTION

Unlike UV, ultrasound and filtration, which only treat the water at the place of contact, the Orca distributes active copper and silver ions throughout the water system and into the biofilm, therefore treating the whole water system.

Therefore, Legionella control occurs even in areas with poor water flow (deadlegs).

RESIDUAL EFFICACY

The copper and silver ions remain active until they are consumed, therefore maintaining a residual treatment effect throughout the water system.

The Orca Legionella control system attacks and destroys the underlying problems that cause Legionella contamination, such as biofilm.

Unlike chemical water treatments such as chlorine dioxide, copper and silver ions do not decay or 'gas off' over distance and the necessary concentrations at the taps are maintained.

Efficacy is not affected by high water temperatures (unlike with chlorine dioxide and UV light systems).

SAFE

The copper and silver levels found at outlets are completely safe to consume.

There are no harmful effects to humans, the environment or animals.

The Orca water treatment system conforms to the maximum allowed values for copper and silver in drinking water as prescribed in the UK Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 1989, and the UK Water Supply (Water Quality) regulations 2000.

There is extensive research being done by the environmental agencies of the European Union as part of obtaining listings for the Orca system in the EU biocidal product directive to ratify copper and silver safety.

CHEMICAL FREE

The Orca water ionisation system requires only copper and silver to control Legionella.

Unlike chemical water treatments such as chlorine dioxide, copper and silver ions do not decay or 'gas off' over distance and therefore maintain the necessary concentrations at the tap points.

Harmful chemical by-products are not produced.

It is also not necessary to comply with COSHH regulations when handling, storing or transporting copper and silver.

NO RESISTANCE

Research suggests that because the Legionella bacteria are killed by the copper and silver ions and not suppressed, development of resistance, which is seen with the temperature control regime and chemical treatments, is unlikely.

Since 1993 the Orca Legionella control system has been successfully controlling Legionellla (Pneumophila, Pseudomas…) in hundreds of water systems and the development of resistance has never been an issue.
