In this blog, we discuss the danger of non-touch sensor taps and analyse links between non-touch sensor taps and Pseudomonas.
BBH – Danger Of Non-Touch Sensor Taps
An article in the Building Better Healthcare (BBH) website entitled ‘Non-touch taps could be fuelling Pseudomonas outbreak, report claims’ discusses a Department of Health report suggesting a link between non-touch infrared taps and Pseudomonas contamination in medical facilities.
Non-Touch Sensor Taps and Pseudomonas
The infrared non-touch sensor taps were introduced in the fight against MRSA. However, the problem is that “these devices usually require the use of an artificial rubber diaphragm. Because of a greater surface area, this will increase the amounts of utilisable carbon sources available and the area on which biofilm can locate.” The work carried out to date suggests the build-up of biofilm in water systems provides protection for Pseudomonas bacteria. Therefore, this enables it to multiply, says the BBH article.
